- English as a Second Language.
Immigrants, coming from all over the world, need an authentic response for this
emotionally charged question. They need to know when is the most appropriate
time to start exposing their children to the English language, assuming they
want them to keep their native language as well. What experts say is that the
most important aspect of language development and of mastering any other
language is having a solid foundation for the first language your child speaks.
It is easier to say than do. But it is worth considering. Children have mixed
feelings about their native language and culture. If you want to help them to
deal with the confusion, you might want some support for yourself first.
- Children and Money. Indulging children
with money and with expensive gifts is not a new phenomenon. It is a personal
choice about what kind of values you want to impose on your daughter and son.
What I am more concerned about is whether children are aware of their family’s
financial situation. Parents’ income ought to be discussed openly and regularly.
As soon as children show interest in purchasing something in the store, they can
be taught how to make smart decisions about spending money. Giving an allowance
from as early as age 5, and accommodating the amount to the kids’ needs and
their maturity can promote responsible behavior in the long run. Being
consistent is a key factor, not just in handling money, but also in every aspect
of parenting.
